Phoenix earns Certified Autism Center designation, largest in the nation

Phoenix has become the largest municipality in the United States to receive the Certified Autism Center™ designation, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). The announcement was made on September 4, 2026, during a ceremony at City Hall, where city leaders received the official certificate. The certification comes after over 80% of front-facing city employees, including police and fire personnel, completed specialized training to support autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals. This initiative was part of the city's efforts to enhance accessibility for all residents and visitors.

Mayor Kate Gallego expressed pride in the city's achievement, stating, "Phoenix prides itself on being a community where everyone is able to thrive—and we are especially proud that the City of Phoenix is now a Certified Autism Center™." The certification process involved onsite reviews of various city locations by IBCCES, which provided actionable recommendations to improve accessibility for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities.

The initiative was recommended by the City’s Strategic Workgroup on Accessibility, chaired by Councilwoman Debra Stark. The workgroup has been instrumental in implementing inclusive design standards and enhancing wayfinding for individuals with disabilities. Stark remarked, "Earning the Certified Autism Center™ designation shows how deeply Phoenix values inclusivity and access."

Nicole Anderson, Chair of the Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues, highlighted the city's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, stating, "This distinction reflects Phoenix’s ongoing commitment to becoming a more accessible, inclusive and welcoming city for people of all abilities."
